Mental Health FAQs

What should I do if I know someone who needs to be committed due to mental health issues?
If you know someone who may require commitment, contact the local mental health center or take the individual to the Emergency Room at Colleton Medical Center (see contact info for Coastal Empire and Colleton Medical Center below). The Probate Court can assist only after Coastal Empire or the hospital has done an initial screening.

What should I do if I know someone who has alcohol or drug problems and is in need of commitment?
Contact the Colleton Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse. The Probate Court can assist only after the Commission has done an initial screening.

Can Probate Court issue an order committing someone before he or she is evaluated?
No, the individual must be evaluated prior to the Probate Court taking action.
