Colleton County Winter Weather Impacts

Colleton County officials continue to monitor the winter weather impacts. South Carolina Department of Transportation and Colleton County Public Works have worked diligently over the last 24 hours to clear the primary routes. Road crews will continue to monitor road conditions and respond as long as it is safe to continue operations. The ambient temperatures will not allow for a significant melting event.   The overnight low temperature will elevate the risk of refreeze resulting in further deterioration of driving conditions. Residents should expect the snow and ice to remain throughout our area for the next few days.  Colleton County Government will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025.  Colleton County Fire-Rescue and Colleton County Sheriff’s Office are fully staffed and responding to calls for service, but the road conditions have significantly increased response times. Residents should Stay Home, Stay Warm, and Stay Safe.

Colleton Residents should remember the following winter safety tips:

  • Avoid unnecessary travel.  If you have to travel, drive during the day, decrease your speed and leave plenty of room to stop the vehicle on icy roads.
  • Report power outages to your electricity provider, NOT 911.  Call 911 for emergencies only.
  • Do not use charcoal grills or portable generators indoors.
  • Utilize a Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detector if you use LP or natural gas powered heating appliances in your home.
  • Do not use gas-powered cooking stoves as a heating source.
  • Assume that any downed power lines are energized and can kill you if you touch them
  • Shelter your animals indoors, if possible.
  • Stay indoors.  If you must go outside, dress in layers of loose fitting, lightweight clothing.  Wear a hat that covers your ears.
  • Stay home, stay warm, and stay safe.
