Colleton County Planning and Development Encourages Residents to Be Aware

As homeowners in Colleton County prepare for construction and repair projects, especially in the wake of recent natural disasters, the Planning and Development Department urges residents to exercise caution when hiring contractors. Understanding how to identify qualified professionals and verify their licensing is crucial for ensuring a successful and compliant project.

In accordance with South Carolina law, all contractors performing work on residential or commercial properties must possess a valid South Carolina contractor’s license. This requirement is designed to protect homeowners and ensure that construction work meets safety and quality standards.

What to Look For When Hiring a Contractor:

1. Verify Licensing: Before engaging a contractor, confirm that they hold a valid license issued by the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (LLR). You can check a contractor’s license status online through the LLR’s website.

2. Get Multiple Quotes: Obtain written estimates from at least three contractors to compare pricing, services, and timelines. This will help you make an informed decision and ensure you are not overpaying for services.

3. Check References: Ask potential contractors for references from previous clients and follow up to inquire about their experiences. Look for contractors with a proven track record of quality work and customer satisfaction.

4. Review Insurance Coverage: Ensure that the contractor carries liability insurance and worker’s compensation coverage to protect yourself from potential damages or liabilities during the project.

5. Request a Written Contract: Always insist on a written contract that outlines the scope of work, materials to be used, project timeline, payment schedule, and any warranties. This will provide clarity and protect your interests throughout the project.

  Be Aware of Scams:

The Planning and Development Department has noted an increase in unlicensed contractors attempting to solicit work in the area. Homeowners should be vigilant and avoid paying large sums upfront. Hiring unlicensed contractors can lead to poor workmanship and legal complications.

For more information about hiring licensed contractors and to access resources, visit the South Carolina Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation’s website at  https://llr.sc.gov or contact the Planning and Development Department at 843-549-1709 or planning@colletoncounty.org

The Planning and Development Department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our community. By taking these precautions, residents can protect their investment and ensure that their construction projects comply with state regulations.
