Magistrate

Magistrates Court also known as Summary Court has criminal jurisdiction over all offenses which are subject to the penalty of a fine of up to $500, or imprisonment not exceeding 30 days in jail or both and in some specific cases the punishment can be more. Magistrates conduct bond hearings and sets bail, preliminary hearings, criminal cases, traffic court cases, including wildlife, fishing, and hunting violations, and issues arrest and search warrants. 

Magistrate Court also has civil jurisdiction when the amount in controversy does not exceed $7,500 and may include such matters as summons and complaints, landlord/tenant actions for evictions, sales of abandoned or delict property, claim and delivery and issue restraining orders.

Bond hearings are held twice a day once in the mornings between the hours of 9:00 am and 10:30 am and once in the afternoons between the hours of 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm and maybe held at others times in rare circumstances. Please contact the Colleton County Detention Center at (843) 549-5742 to verify bond hearing times. 

The Colleton County Magistrate's Court DOES NOT ACCEPT personal or business checks to pay fines. ONLY cashier checks or money orders are currently accepted as payment for your court fine. We do accept cash or credit card payments if you appear in person. 

PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH IN THE MAIL.  Telephone payments are not accepted.

Fines can be paid online by visiting the Magistrate's Online Payments website.
